Guardians of the Galaxy is a fictional team of superheroes that appear in comic books by Marvel Comics. They first appeared in 1969 in the comic book Marvel Super-Heroes #18. The team was modernized in comic form in 2008 with a new line of characters, in the comic book Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1. The Guardians of the Galaxy had another surge of popularity in 2014 when the team was adapted to live action movie form, including the characters Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Yondu, Nebula, and the villainous Ronan the Accuser.
In the comics, the Guardians of the Galaxy are formed to be a proactive team dedicated to protecting the galaxy, rather than simply reacting to threats as they may happen. In the 2014 movie, the Guardians come together as unlikely friends and heroes after they are arrested and held in the same prison. When Star-Lord steals an Infinity Stone, they must work together to keep it from falling into Ronan's hands and ultimately stop him from destroying the universe.
