Projects of such significance require the expertise of more than one person, so for each assignment you are paired with another master builder to execute your grandiose plans. Will your planning and partnership skills be enough to design the most impressive castles in the world?
Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig is a competitive tile-drafting game in which each tile is a room in a castle. You work together with the player on your left to design one castle, and with the player on your right on another castle. On each turn you select two tiles from your hand, reveal them, then work with your partners to place them.
Work with the builders on both sides of you to create two magnificent castles in Between Two Castles Essential Edition. Every room tile adds a new part of the structure, but your final result depends on balancing both partnerships rather than pouring all your effort into one impressive design.
Each turn, players secretly choose two room tiles from their hand and pass the rest onwards. After everyone reveals their choices, each tile is discussed and placed with the neighbour who shares that castle. Different room types score through their position, surrounding rooms, sets and other layout conditions, so both partners need a plan that works for the whole building.
At the end of the game, each player compares the scores of their two castles and keeps the lower result. This unusual scoring system prevents one partnership from being neglected and keeps discussion moving around the table. The Essential Edition combines the original game with the Secrets and Soirees expansion and adds a dedicated solo mode.
