In 1958, Demitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut started an experiment on domestication. From a large group of foxes, they selected the ones that reacted to humans with more curiosity and less aggression. In each generation, they selected only the friendliest pups to become parents — hoping to recreate the process that originally led to domestication thousands of years ago. In The Fox Experiment, you’ll breed your own domesticated foxes.

Guide generations of foxes towards domestication in The Fox Experiment. Inspired by the long running Russian farm fox experiment, this fictionalised strategy game asks players to select promising parents, breed pups with desirable traits and build a research programme that earns the strongest scientific results.

Each of the five rounds moves through selection, breeding, research and administration. Players choose one male and one female parent, gather the trait dice shown on those foxes and roll them to complete symbols on new pup cards. A pups completed traits determine its friendliness and the qualities it may pass to the next generation.

Research can complete studies, unlock improvements on a personal mat and attract sponsors that provide bonuses and end game scoring. Once a generation is complete, the newly created pups enter the kennel as possible parents for the following round, allowing every table to develop its own family of increasingly friendly foxes.
