The mug is backed by intricate silver thistle patterns as shields are raised from the curved sides. Alternating Robert the Bruce, Saltire (Saint Andrew's Cross or the crux decussata) and White Thistle shields as separated by long swords. The handle is very ornate, featuring a large sword as the centrepiece while also being decorated with the same intricate patterns that feature on the cup.
